Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born to a musical family on August 9th, 1963, in Newark New Jersey the daughter of gospel star Cissy Houston (nee Emily Lee Drinkard) and John Russell Houston Jr. and cousin of singing star Dionne Warwick. In Newark Whitney, she began singing with the church choir in the early years of her childhood. at the age of 15, she joined her mother in backing vocals in Chaka's smash Im Every Woman from 1978.
